My Favourite Band Poster Artists

Some of my favourite Band Poster Artists and where to follow them!

After years of typing 'Queens of the Stone Age posters' into google and looking up the artists for inspiration, I've decided to compile a list. It's as much for me as it is for you. Enjoy!

Justin Hampton, the man, the myth, the legend. I've been enjoying his work since 2004 when I was gifted a copy of Paul Grushkin & Dennis King's masterpiece Art of Modern Rock: The Poster Explosion. I was shaped by his work long before that, just never had a face and a name to put to the stunning art he creates. Before the internet we got our information from books. What? I know.

Justin has been involved in the art and music scene since 1990 (the year I was born!) He's worked for some of the biggest and best. I will forever aspire to produce work as prolific and impactful as his.

I'd have to credit Scrojo for my career pursuit into the wonderful world of Band Poster Design and Illustration. His thick, stylised lineart, subtle colourisation, layout, figure form and character immediately attracted me to the discipline.

He's designed over 2,000 posters. Let that sink in for a moment.

He also did a lot of design on the bible, the tome that is Art of Modern Rock: The Poster Explosion.

Bonnie MacLean

The late, great Bonnie MacLean introduced me to the world of Psychedelic Art. Her stylised text is legendary and has been a key influence on typography ever since.

She worked as the in-house designer for the Fillmore from 1967 to 1971 where she illustrated some of the most iconic band posters of all time.

The Doors, Pink Floyd, The Yardbirds, Muddy Waters, Cream, The Who and most recently, Hall & Oates... Jealous yet?

Emek's Fine Art, highly detailed and hand drawn style of illustration has inspired many. One of those many is me. 12 year old me, taking a fineliner and a pad of paper to all my lessons. Every class is art if you bring your own equipment.

Emek might win top trumps (eurgh, Trump) here. Queens of the Stone Age, Coheed and Cambria (my favourite band), B.B. King, The Mars Volta! Even Neil deGrasse Tyson - like, how? The list really does go on. I won't even start on the album covers. Check out his website, a real treasure trove.

Jermaine heavily influenced my colouring style and taught me that gradients can be cool. Which is great, because I bloody love them. His work was where I first started to see those grunge elements that I'm so fond of now.

I've always felt that he marries multiple styles perfectly. Grunge, delicate and bold lineart, beautiful colour profiles and interesting characterisation.

Well, you gotta like yourself, right?

I was always involved in music and art. I quit art to pursue music and then suffered from severe anxiety, panic attacks and agoraphobia, making it impossible to tour or gig. I found solace once again in drawing. Band Poster Design was the natural destination, a combination of my fundamentals.
