Logo Design - Which Files Types?

Which file types should you send to your client?

Using Logo Design as an example here, as you’ll likely want to send the most files types in this instance.

Communication with your client is key, make sure you know what they’ll be using the design for, or, cover all your bases.

Your client will likely need versions of their Logo for print and web, this means CMYK Colour Workspace for print and RGB Colour Workspace for web. The minimum to send would be a PDF for print with transparent background and a PNG for web with transparent background - this would cover most of their needs. I like to at least add an RGB JPG as well.

Perhaps the Logo is colour and you want to send a black and a white version too. Maybe they’ll need a large form file as well - an Illustrator file works best for this.

Now we have quite a few files we’re working with:

CMYK
PDF Transparent Background Colour
PDF Transparent Background Black
PDF Transparent Background White

RGB
PNG Transparent Background Colour
PNG Transparent Background Black
PNG Transparent Background White
JPG Colour
JPG Black
JPG White

Editable/Large Form
.AI / .EPS Illustrator File

Make sure to label each file with CMYK/RGB | For Print/For Web | Colour/Black/White.

Why not go the extra mile and include a style guide detailing where which files should be used.

Some client’s may require a specific file type, so it’s always best to ask. But generally you’ll find that the most useful to them have been mentioned.

I hope this guide has helped, ask any questions you may have in the comments.
